Chapter 6

Ash watched from his desk as Darius sipped the coffee he'd handed him through the bars. He grimaced a few times, but kept drinking. Granted, Laeticia's brew wasn't exactly gourmet, but Ash couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong with Darius. His haggard face, wild eyes, and short temper suggested more than caffeine withdrawal or a hangover. He didn't quite dare to speculate what the problem might be, however. On some level, he didn't want to know.

One thing seemed certain, though—he couldn't release Darius the way he'd originally planned. If he were let loose to wander the streets, or even the woods, there was no telling what sort of trouble he might start. Renewing his feud with Brody remained only one possibility, and maybe not the worst one.

After he finished the coffee, Darius crumpled the Styrofoam cup in his fingers and hurled the pieces onto the floor of the cell. His hands trembled as he wrapped them around the bars. In truth, Ash felt a little shaky, too.

Darius seemed to be struggling to keep his tone level. "Okay, Ash, are you going to tell me what the deal is here?" Ash shrugged, trying to sound casual. "Just that I thought we should talk—I mean really hash some stuff out. Whenever I try, you keep disappearing on me, so this time, I'm taking control of the situation."

"I disappeared on you last night because it was safer. You need to trust me."

"Maybe safer for you. I've got the rest of the town to consider, though, Darius. I'm responsible for their wellbeing along with my own."

"You don't understand. How can you? This is a dangerous game we're playing. And I'm not talking about anyone's ego, or a broken heart."

That stung. "Why, Darius? What is it I don't know? Do you have something to tell me about Jed's case after all?"

"I already told you I have nothing to say about Jed, and I didn't beat that asshole Shelton up. I wouldn't waste my time."

"Okay, so fill me in on whatever I've missed. I'm listening."

Darius sighed and raked both hands over his head, leaving his hair in a spiky mess. "Ash, there are things you don't know about my family. Okay, so we're all a little crazy. That's pretty much common knowledge. What I'm referring to runs deeper. Like genetic stuff, going back generations. I don't know if I can explain it. Or if I should even attempt to."

"Try me." Ash's voice quavered. He suspected Darius was leading up to some confession involving hereditary mental illness. Heck, he could handle that. One of his favorite family legends involved his great-grandma Minnie cooking up her own maple syrup in the nude, complaining about the sap house being too stuffy inside. "Darius, you don't have to hold back with me. I care about you. I thought I'd made that clear… over and over, for ten years now."

"I know. And it's because your feelings are clear to me that I'm holding back."

Was this the closest Darius would ever come to expressing his own emotions? For some reason, Ash had hoped for more.
